The first visit

What happens at a first appointment here?

Five stages, in a fixed order. You check in. We examine - a full exam, digital X-rays where they are actually needed, and an oral cancer screening, which takes minutes and is the single most underrated part of a dental visit. We clean, unless something found in the exam has to come first. We explain what we found, what the options are, and what each one costs. And you decide - what to go ahead with, and in what order.

If it has been years since your last dental visit, you are not the exception; you are a Tuesday. Patients tell us in their own reviews that they arrived anxious or embarrassed and were surprised by how it actually went. A long gap is a reason to come in, not a thing to be judged for, and the first visit is an examination and a conversation, not a lecture.

Money, upfront

How is cost handled for new patients?

If you are coming without insurance, ask about the new patient special when you book: a cleaning, x-rays and an exam for $159. Offers change, so the front desk confirms current terms at the time of booking.

Cost is the question most people are actually asking when they put off a dental visit, so it gets answered before treatment rather than after. With insurance, share your plan and we check your benefits, with your estimated share in writing for the asking - see insurance and payment options. Without insurance, being uninsured should not mean an unpredictable number: ask about our options when you book, and see no insurance? for how that works. Either way, the rule is the same one that governs the whole first visit: you hear the number, then you decide.

Insurance, named

Which plans can you bring here?

We accept most major private dental insurance plans, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna Dental, Altus, Dominion National and MetLife. Bring your card to the first visit, or call ahead with it and the front desk can check your coverage before you arrive, so the visit starts with your numbers already known. If you are between plans or uninsured, the practice works with Cherry for financing, and the no insurance page explains how care works without a plan. Two other useful things to do before day one: complete any forms the front desk sends you at booking, and start a records transfer from your previous dentist early, since offices vary in how quickly they send films.

Common questions

Answers before you call

Is Grafton Smiles accepting new patients right now?

Yes. We are accepting new patients of all ages at the North Grafton office, including children, adults and older adults, and two dentists practice here so first appointments are usually available across the week rather than months out. Booking works by phone during office hours or online through our booking page at any time. To take the first slot that fits your week, call Grafton Smiles at (508) 839-6464.

How do I transfer my records from my old dentist?

Sign a release and we handle the rest - your previous office sends your records and X-rays directly to us, and you do not need to have an awkward conversation with anyone. Recent X-rays are genuinely useful because they can save you being imaged twice, but do not delay booking if getting them looks slow; we can work without them. To start the transfer, call Grafton Smiles at (508) 839-6464.

I am nervous about the dentist. How do you handle that?

By telling you what is happening before it happens, at every stage, and by scheduling nothing you have not agreed to. Several of our patients have written publicly that they arrived with real dental fear and now keep their appointments without dread, and that change came from predictability, not bravery. If anxiety has kept you away for years, say so when you book so the first visit can be paced for it. Call Grafton Smiles at (508) 839-6464.

Do you see children, and from what age?

Yes, children's dentistry is part of the practice, and first visits for young children are deliberately short, gentle and unthreatening so the dentist never becomes a place to fear. Ask us when booking about the right age for a first visit for your child, since the honest answer depends on the child and their teeth. If a small child needs sedation-level treatment, we refer to a pediatric specialist. Call Grafton Smiles at (508) 839-6464.

Will I get a cleaning at my first visit?

Usually yes. The standard first appointment is an exam, X-rays where needed, an oral cancer screening and a hygiene cleaning in one visit. The exception is when the exam finds something that has to come first, such as gum disease that needs a deeper cleaning than a standard hygiene visit, in which case we explain exactly that before anything is booked. To schedule a first visit, call Grafton Smiles at (508) 839-6464.
